News 8 Investigates Phone Ads For Locksmiths

See below news videos on Locksmith Scams. Don't be a Victim!

A good day can turn into a terrible day in an instant when you lock your keys in your car, this gets even worst if you live in a big city like New York. This can be something that is very difficult to deal with. You really only have two options when you lock your keys in your car. You can either try to pull a MacGyver and attempt to unlock the door yourself or you can make a call to a local locksmith to have them come and unlock the door for you. While calling a local New York City locksmith might sound like the easiest thing to do, sometimes it is not. Locksmith scams have made it difficult and somewhat scary to do business with locksmiths.

There are a number of locksmith scams that you should be aware of. You should also know what to look for and how to act when dealing with a locksmith scam. Sometimes you won't know you've been scammed until it is too late and you're car has been stolen. This is a much rarer scam but it is also a much more devastating scam leaving you without a vehicle and out of luck. Other scammers will quote you a responsible fee and then end up charging you much more once all is said and done.

So who does it actually work? Well, some locksmith businesses will pull trick that make them seem like they're a local company when they're really not. They start by setting up advertisements on the internet, phone books, and news papers. The advertisements display fake addresses. While the phone numbers are real, they are actually numbers to call centers located in another state. You'll think that you're calling a local locksmith while you're really calling a number which is out of area. You'll then have to press a button to be connected to another locksmith in your area.

These companies usually have good standings within the Better Business Bureau. This is true because you think you're calling a legit locksmith company which will usually quote you a very responsible price. Of course, after you hang up the phone and the locksmith arrives things start to change. The locksmith will end up charging you a ridiculous fee instead of the amount that was quoted to you over the phone. And of course what are you going to do? Most people will suck it up and pay the more expensive bill. Let's face it, it's easier to just go ahead and pay for it.

There are a number of things to look for when dealing with a locksmith. The first thing you'll encounter is an unmarked car. Most legit locksmith companies will work out of company vans which have a company logo plastered on the side of it. You should always be weary when a locksmith shows up in an unmarked vehicle. You should also request an invoice ahead of time. Doing so will ensure the amount you're going to pay before the work is done. Be sure that the all locksmith company, and not just the NYC Locksmith asks for your identification. If they don't then there might be something wrong.
